The quality must be right

In the first of the 12 new sequences from the 4th episode "Inspector Rex" Gedeon Burkhard investigates on a race track. The actor himself is a owner of a little racer (cart).

Télécran: Do you have shootings allready?
Gedeon Burkhard: No we had a christmas breake. At the end of February we will start again for the rest of the year. We'll make the new sequences which will be shown on TV next year.

Since a while you are playing the role of Alexander Brandner - is everything just routine for you now?
If it would be routine for me I would not keep on working. As long as the work is fun for me and an artistic challenge, and as long as I can find out different facets of the role I will keep on acting as Inspector. During this year I will see if it's interesting for me any longer. Then I will make my decision.

How much do you take part of the storyboard and your role?
Thanks heaven that we have authors who are not bad. But of course, sometimes I have scenes they don't fit. Then I talk to the authors and producers and together we find an other solution. But in 99.9 percent of all cases everything is okay. Usually I only change the one or the other dialog a littel.

You have no problems with extraneous authors who write for the serial?
It depends. We seldom have extraneous authors. But if someone different than our two authors write we have the advantage that we produce our serial according to the successful american system. We have a creative producer, who is working only for this serial and he is doing that from the beginning to the end.

Do you have time to act near by the serail for other productions?
That's difficult. It must be a lucky break so I can coordinate my few time near by "Inspector Rex" with an other production. In this year it's impossible.

What happens if you marry and get children? Will you slow down?
Well, at the moment there is no reason to care about that. But if ever - many people marry and have children but they still have to work day by day. At the moment I have the advantage not to travel around and everything happens here in Vienna.

After "Black Beauty" you said that you would never make serials anymore. What do you think now about serials?
"Black Beauty" was an absolute negative experience for me. It was a rather unprofessional serial. The production was not able to manage the problem with the different authors. There was no continuity. First I thougt that was usual in serials. And that time nobody in the film or TV branche employed an actor who played a role in a serial.

Whom does Rhett Buttler alias Rex follow if the trainer and you give the same oder?
He will always follow the trainer. They are a team, a unity. And that's important. The dog has to have an orientation, someone he can react on. I act myself and can't give him orders. That's of course impossible.

Did you had the chance to develop a relationship to the dog?
We are lucky that we like each other. He accepts me as a friend and collegue. So we also can make long shooting within he follows my orders. This is possible because we built up a relationship. But the main person is always the trainer.

In the serial you are an idol for many people. Are there any sequels when you are in public?
For me it is a manner of living. It's a part of my life that people begin to talk with me and I like to live with that. I am glad about it. I am an actor for the audience and without the audience I can't be an actor. So that's totally allright.

Is it no problem that you have to check your behaviour in public all the time?
Well, when I wonna be relaxed and not recognised in pulic there are many ways to do so. That's not the problem.

From Inspector Brandner we expect him to have an athletic body. Do you have to train your body very often?
At the moment it is impossible to have a real training program. But I am fortunated having a body which does not put on weight. Usually I do funsport like water ski, jetski and also fitness center, if I have enough energy for it.

Which moments make you really glad and satisfied?
Sometimes it happens, that we have to make scenes I don't like very much or which are not totally logical. Then I talk to all the others and when I find a good solution I am satisfied and glad.

And in private life?
The most important thing in my life is that the people I love are allright and feel fine. And if everybody is allright I am very pleased.

Once you had two places of residence. Did you leave Los Angeles behind now?
Yes, I closed that book. I live in Vienna and I love to live here.

How did you get such a seldom name like Gedeon?
As my mother was a teenager she visited my grandma in Lago Maggiore. There she fell in love with a 30 year old hungarian. His name sounded like Gedeon. Till today I wether do know if it is written correctly nor if this name really exists. I never met a person having the same name..

How have you been in school?
I was kicked out of almost all schools I have been. The teachers were unable to teach. If I was bored, and I usually was bored, I entertained the whole class. And obviously I could do that better than the teachers.

And how did you go on?
First I was in a Munich school and then in United Kingdom at the Steiner-School on the countryside. Then I had to return to Germany. There they wanted to take me into a school for bad-children - you can't be kicked out there anymore.
Anyway, my parents decided to take me into a private school in Starnberg. But after one year I had to leave that school again. Afterwards I have been in Munich on an american school and left it in the 9th class without any graduations.

How did you find a way out of this disaster?
I was young and I didn't do anything. But suddenly I got interested in ballet 'cause of the great Nurejev. I found a musical school and they took me. I got the education and then I went to the national Ballet Academy in Munich.
This was a very hard time and my body could not resist the exertions. One day I got an offer to play in a movie. I recognised that Nurejev is unreachable for me and then I decided to become an actor.

Is it right that you love cars?
Of course! I tell you something. Recently I made a dream of my childhood come true. I bought a Go-Cart. At the moment it is on a race track near by Vienna. Since I have the financial possibilities I sometimes do things like that.

When did you start racing?
I bought the car one year ago. Since I can think I was fascineted by cars. In America I made a race training. There I also had a big and old cabriolet. It needed far too much petrol. .

Did you have good lap times?
Well, for an amateur not so bad!
